Incorrect grip pressure is one of the major causes of poor shots. Too much grip pressure at the beginning of the swing, or applied any time during the swing, creates tension that disrupts the swing and causes a variety of undesired shots.
Finding the correct grip pressure has always been difficult. Everyone has a different way of describing the correct grip pressure. Sam Snead said, "You should hold the club like you are holding a baby bird, tight enough to keep him from flying away but light enough not to hurt the bird." Ben Hogan said, "Too tight a grip will immobilize your wrists."
The best way I have found to determine correct grip pressure is to grip the club firmly with your fingers. This will create tension in your wrists and forearms. Then, with your arms hanging straight down from your shoulders, swing the club back and forth by turning your shoulders. While the club is swinging you can release the tension in your wrists and forearms while maintaining a firm grip with your fingers. This will allow for constant grip pressure during the swing with little or no tension in your wrists and forearms
